Disclaimer
This project is a work in progress, meaning that enhancements will be made as funds are raised. A short walking trail (Hattie's Trail) has been established thanks to the Chesapeake Bay Trust. The Maryland Historical Trust has provided funding toward completion of the museum & pavilion. This project also wishes to thank the Preservation Trust of Wicomico, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and some Salisbury University professors for their staunch support.
Our Mission
The history of the Buffalo Soldiers has often been maligned by those with ill intent and self-serving purposes. This project is relying upon subject-matter experts who have collectively spent over a century studying the brave men who answered the call when the U.S. Regular Army enlisted them to play an integral role in fulfilling this country's dream of manifest destiny. Our purpose is to establish and to preserve a place where Buffalo Solder history will come alive. The property was purchased by and lived on by a Buffalo Soldier who served with the 9th Cavalry in the late 1800s.
The site will collaborate with partners who embrace our mission to educate both the local and broader communities as to the valor and courage of Black American soldiers starting a few years after the bloody Civil War had ended. Activities to engage the public will foster a sense of respect for the sacrifices made by Buffalo Soldiers and open minds to the broader missions undertaken by Black soldiers who could not escape the daggers of racism no matter where they roamed, not even while serving in the U.S. Regular Army as enlisted men.
